Does it matter for school success if kids are engaged in extracurricular activities?
Yes!
More than 20% of middle and high school kids cannot participate in extracurricular activities they love due to high expenses required to participate. Studies show that school activities on average cost $275 for equipment, travel, and entry fees each school year, well beyond the means of most low income families.
Extracurriculars are important for many reasons. Those who do NOT participate in sports, music, clubs, or the arts have proven to:
- Graduate at a far lower rate
- Score significantly lower in math and reading
- Have lower attendance rates
- Complete fewer career and technical courses
Studies show that students who engage in extracurricular activities develop positive attitudes and life skills such as time management, high self confidence and a quality work ethic.
Do you mean after school activities have a real impact on the future life of kids with limited means?
Yes!
As teens turn into adults, the lessons they learned in school carry throughout their whole life.
Students who DID participate in after school activities:
- Have incomes ABOVE the poverty level for much or all of their lives
- Are far MORE likely to attend college or get good jobs
- On average have HIGHER patience/tolerance levels and are more empathetic
- Have far LOWER rates of drug, alcohol abuse, and criminal records as adults
There are very few things one can do to transformationally improve a young person’s prospects for success in life. Extracurricular activities is the major contributor to helping kids stay engaged at school.
Engagement and self confidence always come from participation in an activity they love, learning critical life skills, and succeeding in school.
